Observable effective and surface magnetic fields are determined for a number of nonaxisymmetric field configurations suggested by theoretical models. Results confirm previous observations that most stellar surface fields cannot be very inhomogeneous. The effective field variations for several of the cases considered are similar to those of displaced dipoles, although distortions in the surface field curves are noted. The presence of an inhomogeneous field structure may explain the anomalous effective field variations of HD 37776.
