Total magnitudes in the BT system are derived for all 1180 galaxies listed in volumes 1 and 2 of the Zwicky catalog in an 18° × 18° area centered on the Virgo cluster. The magnitudes of 512 galaxies are weighted means of the Ames, Reiz, and Zwicky catalogs reduced to the BT system by means of the transformation equations derived in Paper VIII from the 139 standards of Paper VII.
The magnitudes and mean errors of the 139 standards are 9.32 ≤ BTC ≤ 14.70 and 0.029 ≤ σ ≤ 0.090 ( = 0.055). The magnitudes and mean errors of the 373 nonstandard galaxies (not included in Paper VIII) are 10.76 ≤ mTC ≤ 16.18 and 0.078 ≤ σ ≤ 0.270 ( = 0.142) (Table 2). Ten objects (m ≤ 16.0) listed by Ames and 109 listed by Reiz but not by Zwicky were excluded (Appendix). Corrections to the three catalogs and to the Uppsala catalog (UGC) are listed.
For 668 other galaxies which are not in the Second Reference Catalog or UGC and still lack the diameter data needed for a proper reduction, only a statistical correction to the same mean system could be applied (Table 4). For these the magnitude range is 12.90 ≤ mTC ≤ 15.79 and the mean error 0.21 ≤ σ ≤ 0.38 ( = 0.344).
