Spectrophotometry of the nucleus of NGC 1275 on six consecutive nights reveals about 30% variations in the 4000-6000 A continuum flux with no detectable change in spectral shape. This variability and the night-to-night variations in optical polarization reported by Martin, Angel, and Maza (1976) suggest a nonthermal source with a diameter not greater than 10 to the 16th cm. The inverse Compton scattered X-ray flux from such a source should be variable on a similar time scale. A simple model of the adiabatic expansion of the optical source explains the spectrum of the compact (about 1 pc) radio components in NGC 1275.
