The properties of two types of nonthermal continuous radiation, synchrotron and inverse Compton radiation, are reviewed, and the information that such radiation provides concerning superluminous radio sources is discussed. Both synchrotron radiation and inverse Compton radiation are related to the existence of ultrarelativistic electrons in a magnetic field or in a photon gas. It is noted that the sources of this radiation may be responsible for producing such different objects as normal stars, Wolf-Rayet stars, and pulsars. A model to explain the properties of superluminous radio sources (including flux variability and the absence of an inverse Compton catastrophe) is considered in which a galaxy core ejects plasmas in opposite directions at speeds approaching the speed of light.
