The present discussion deals with visual binary systems that contain a strong-CN K giant and a strong-lined main sequence companion. It is argued that enhancement of the blue CN bands is associated with genuine supermetallicity, rather than with an overabundance of nitrogen. The arguments for supermetallicity are based on the principle, according to which two noninteracting stars of common origin and of greatly differing temperatures and surface gravities are unlikely to be affected in the same way by any agent that spuriously increases line strengths, other than the simple possibility of genuine heavy-element overabundance relative to hydrogen.
