Scientific paper

An approximate method has been developed for analyzing the accuracy with which short wavelength variations in the earth's gravity field can be estimated from measurements with low polar satellites, either with on-board gradiometers or with accurate tracking from other satellites. Coverage is essentially uniform at low latitudes, and the analysis replaces the spherical earth by a flat earth surface, treating the gravity potential variations as a stationary two-dimensional random process. Different measurement types are compared.
