An optical linear polarization map is presented for the highly inclined spiral galaxy NGC 7331. Along the major axis of the galaxy the polarization appears to arise from the scattering of light from the bright central nucleus, but elsewhere the dominant polarizing mechanism appears to be the transmission of light through grains aligned by the galactic magnetic field and the Davis-Greenstein mechanism, in a similar way to the polarization of starlight in our own Galaxy.
