For identification of faint southern objects with the ESO-(B)-survey it is often useful to know the relation between the image diameters, d, of stars and their magnitudes, B. For this purpose a sample of 20 characteristic curves d d(B) was studied in on-film copies of the survey. It is found that for B greater than 10m the characteristic curves are always sufficiently represented by the simple expression d a2B-squared + a1B + a0. The surprising similarity of the shapes of characteristic curves on different films allows the construction of a mean curve.
