The present derivation of multicomponent, reacting MHD flows considers arbitrarily oriented magnetic fields, and yields differential equations for both general flows and the special case of plane-parallel steady flows. A critical assessment is made of the momentum and energy 'source terms', and exact formulae are obtained for those terms in two special cases of elastic scattering. Also discussed are the effects of such reactive cases as those of recombination, photoionization, photodissociation, charge exchange, and reactive scattering. Departures from Maxwellian velocity distributions are considered. The quantitative significance of the discrepancies pointed out between the present results and those of Flower et al. (1985) is treated in the context of shocks propagating in interstellar clouds.
