It is shown that combined measurements of the X-ray flux and of the microwave brightness diminution associated with clusters of galaxies could constitute a means for making an absolute determination of distances and, in particular, of the Hubble constant. The bounds, approximately 50 and 100 km/s per Mpc, are consistent with the existing, still incomplete, but rapidly growing body of data.
