The basic principles behind the global mathematical modeling of the ionosphere are described. A two-zone model of the ionosphere, unified for middle and high latitudes, is considered as an example. In constructing this model, attention is given to slow variations of the ionosphere connected with diurnal variations of UV radiation and UT effects under magnetically quiet conditions.
