The authors report observations of CO millimeter wave emission from the ultraluminous far-infrared galaxy VII Zw 31. At z = 0.054, this is the most distant galaxy in which CO emission has been reported. The CO luminosity of 1.1×1010K km s-1pc2 is about 35 times that of the Milky Way and higher than from any other galaxy reported in the literature. The corresponding molecular hydrogen mass is about 5×1010M_sun;. The ratio of far-infrared luminosity to molecular mass is similar to that in galactic giant molecular clouds with active O star formation such as W51.
