Using diagrams of the observational conditions of sunspot groups, it is demonstrated how the shape of the curve of development of the sunspot group area affects the frequency distribution of sunspot groups with regard to their apparent lifetimes and east-west asymmetry of appearance and disappearance of groups. It is also shown that, if the curves of development of the sunspot group area have particular shapes, apparent "interrupted" groups may be generated as a result of the existence of the visibility function and solar rotation.
