This paper reports on broad band near-IR photometric observations of 630 objects found in the Valinhos 2.2 μm survey of the southern galactic plane. Ninety percent of them are identified with IRAS Point Sources. The near-IR and Infra Red Astronomical Satelllte (IRAS) fluxes, although not measured simultaneously, are combined to study the overall energy distributions of these objects. Most of them are typical of late-type stars surrounded by circumstellar dust shells (CDS). A classification of the objects based on three colour indices, namely, K - L, L- [12 μ m] and [12 μ m]- [25 μm] is defined in order to discriminate stars surrounded by CDSs of various physical properties as well as oxygen-rich against carbon-rich stars. Several interesting peculiar sources are briefly discussed and proposed for further multi-frequency observations.
