VLA observations of formaldehyde absorption at 2 cm towards the radio continuum source W3(OH) are combined with previous observations at 6 cm, showing pronounced opacity variations across the source. In the western part of the source the absorption is found to be stronger than the mean absorption over W3(OH) for both transitions. At most velocities, the absorption in the northeast is shown to be weak at 2 cm and strong at 6 cm. The density of molecular hydrogen and the formaldehyde column density per unit velocity interval are determined as a function of velocity and position across the source, and both quantities are shown to increase from east to west.
