The early-type Seyfert-2 galaxy Mrk 3 was studied photometrically and spectroscopically to determine the overall structure and the nature of the extended emission surrounding the Seyfert nucleus. CCD surface photometry in broad band colours confirms the classification of Mrk 3 as an elliptical galaxy. The differences between observed isophotes and true ellipses indicate the existence of a small stellar disk lying perpendicular to the minor axis of the galaxy. Colour index maps show the existence of an extended region of gas emission along the minor axis of the galaxy. The velocity field indicates that the gas in the extended emission line region (EELR) is confined to a disk which is seen edge-on. The forbidden and permitted lines emitted from the narrow line region (NLR) are very broad (FWHM 1000 km s-1) and possess an enhanced blue wing. Dust in the NLR and EELR reduces the amount of light received from the far side of the gas disk.
