A plane semi-infinite atmosphere consisting of an arbitrary number of
homogeneous layers with known optical thicknesses is considered. An
effective algorithm of the radiative field determination for the Milne
problem is given. The case of layers of large optical thickness is
studied in detail. Simple asymptotic formulae are found for this case.
