Many X-ray binaries observed by SIGMA show hard X-ray tails extending to high energies. I discuss the mechanisms and conditions under which an accretion disk around a black hole or neutron star may emit a significant fraction of its luminosity in hard X-rays. The effect of the illumination of the companion star will also be discussed, including in particular effects on the secular evolution as well as the possibility of explaining soft X-ray transients.
