We present ROSAT-HRI observations of the central region of M 87. By comparison with radio and optical data we investigate whether the X-ray emission of the jet can be explained by the high frequency tail of the radio to optical synchrotron spectrum. We indeed find that knot D and the optically brightest knot A are likely to emit synchrotron X-rays. Although the synchrotron model of the X-ray emission is compatible with the observations at all wavelengths a thermal origin of the X-rays cannot completely ruled out.
