Scientific paper

We report the discovery of the optical counterpart of the X-ray
transient GRS 1009-45 (XN Vel 1993). From an analysis of photometric and
spectroscopic observations at early and late stages, we are able to
constrain the distance to the nova and the absolute magnitude of the
late-type companion.
