Stars: Late-Type, Infrared Sources

Scientific paper

The Byurakan-IRAS Stars (BIS objects) are optical identifications for IRAS PSC sources by means of the First Byurakan Survey (FBS) low-dispersion spectra. The BIS area is defined by the FBS at DE>61{deg} having high galactic latitude fields (|b|>15). The total surface is 1504 square degrees. The program of optical identification of the IRAS PSC sources had a different approach compared to similar works, as it was aimed at identification of all point sources without a discrimination against their IR colors, and further compilation of lists of galactic and extragalactic objects (BIS and BIG objects, respectively) for their further study. 5 lists of BIS and 10 lists of BIG objects have been published (2 latter are in press), the BIG lists being continued. The first list contained both stars and galaxies, 4 others had consequent numeration, though 3 of them contained galaxies, and one, stars. The BIS/BIG numeration was introduced starting with the 6th pa per. At that moment, 179 galaxies and 137 stars had been published already (objects #1-316). Thus we decided to continue the numeration with BIG 180 and BIS 138. To avoid any confusion in the future, we call BIG (numbers 1-179) and BIS (numbers 1-137) also the previously published objects. To help users easily find objects both by the published and introduced later numbers, we give both in the catalog.
A number of BIS objects had been known before (some bright stars, a number of FBS late-type stars), however the identification with IRAS source was not available because of either large errors in old catalogs, or proper motion and a shift between (typically) B1950 and the IRAS (1983) epochs. For the same reason (proper motions), positions measured from DSS1 and DSS2 can be different.
Two objects, BIS 44 and BIS 238 (found from different FBS zones), have been found to be identical, after additional checking of our results we find 11 objects as doubtful identifications (all from the 1st list). We list them as rejected objects. 4 misprints had occurred in IRAS names in the original papers: published 06561+7539, 15078+6156, 16395+6439, 17000+8235 must be 06561+7359, 15078+6155, 16359+6439, 17001+8235, respectively. All are corrected in the present version.
The BIS sample is being used for a compilation of a total list of IRAS PSC sources with their optical identification and relevant data in the FBS area, which will be finished after inspection and correction of the previously known identifications as well.
The BIS catalog is given in order of right ascension J2000, 276 objects (eliminating 11 rejected ones).
