We have analyzed MIR measurements of stellar scintillation and converted them to estimates of the Fried length at balloon altitudes. These estimates show that atmospheric effects are of no concern in planet detection at balloon altitudes and need not be corrected at all. Like ground based systems, balloons offer low relative cost and the opportunity to modify and correct instrumentation. Like space based systems, they offer near perfect input wavefronts permitting the use of small telescopes. Thus balloon borne systems are the pefect first step in imaging detection of extrasolar planets.
