Magnetic reconnection is a process of fundamental importance in the solar corona. The nature of the magnetic field structures at which reconnection takes place and how observations demonstrate that such structures are commonplace in the solar corona are reviewed. It is shown how the local environment influences the energy conversion that takes place during reconnection and how time dependent effects can be incorporated. Numerical experiments that can bring together these two aspects and insights that these have brought to the understanding of this process are discussed. The areas in which CLUSTER and SOHO will make the greatest contribution to studies of reconnection are outlined.
