A preliminary estimate of the intrinsic ionizing luminosity of a hidden Seyfert 1 nucleus in Was 49 is made by means of diagnostics of the ionization parameter and density from long-slit spectra of the extended emission-line region. The nuclear spectrum of Was 49b exhibits a very weak featureless continuum yet extremely strong narrow emission lines and broad Balmer emission lines (about 12,000 km/s). The disk of Was 49a has very extended emission lines, indicating that it is exposed to a powerful source of ionizing radiation. Neither nucleus in Was 49 is observed to be luminous enough to be responsible for this extended emission. An estimate is obtained for the intrinsic luminosity of Was 49 and Was 49b based on standard ionization parameter calculations. These calculations support the theory that Was 49b is illuminating its companion with ionizing radiation and that it is primarily responsible for the ionization of the disk of Was 49a. It is estimated that Was 49b is actually about 200 times more luminous than it is observed to be.
