The main results obtained on the plasma environment of Mars from data collected by the Phobos-2 spacecraft during its January 29 to March 27, 1989 orbiting mission are discussed. The Phobos orbits allowed measurements of the Martian magnetic fields, characteristics of plasma waves, and spatial and spectral distribution and ion composition of particles in the equatorial regions of the Martian plasma environment. One of the most important features discovered by the Phobos mission is the dominance of ionospheric ions (e.g., O(+)) inside the magnetospheric cavity of Mars; the Martian magnetosphere was found to be the most oxygen-dominated magnetosphere observed hitherto in the solar system.
