Principles and arguments from ordinary quantum theory are used in discussing the possibility that the mass spectrum of the Kerr black hole may be discrete, and a formula is inferred for the allowed mass levels. This formula is based on the assumption that the squared irreducible mass is a multiple of the black-hole analogue of an adiabatic invariant action integral in mechanics. The formula is applied in a discussion of whether a Kerr hole not in its ground state will spontaneously decay as would an excited atom.
