An attempt is made to justify the space effort from a scientific point of view. It is explained why the conquest of space is of particular importance to astronomy and why the ultraviolet is a domain of electromagnetic waves of special interest to studies of hot stars and of the interstellar medium. The considerations are substantiated by a description of two mutually complementary experiments aimed at studying hot stars: a low-resolution experiment carried out on board the English-Belgian satellite TD1, and a high-resolution experiment performed by the United States OAO-3 satellite. The spectra obtained in these experiments are analyzed.
