The structure of the neutral and ionized regions of the Orion nebula is described as recorded on direct photographic plates through selected interference filters. Seven of the plates, which were exposed at the prime focus station of the Mayall telescope are reproduced. Differences in structure are noted in the continuum, H alpha + (N 2), (S 2), and H beta exposures. The geometry and variations of the structure plus polarization information leads to the conclusion that much of the outer region of the Orion nebula is reflection nebula.
