Two 1.5 m searchlights are operated in coincidence at Mt. Hopkins, observing the Crab nebula for a pulsed effect at gamma-ray energies of about 50,000 GeV. A wide field (full value 5 deg) was used to test the possibility that the angular distribution of Cerenkov light may be broadened by geomagnetic deflection of the shower particles. Analysis of 88,000 showers from January 1972 shows a 3.8 sigma positive effect (0.66 ms pulse width) or 4.5 sigma (1.3 ms pulse width) at the interpulse position. Results from 138,000 showers in February 1972, however, show only a small, nonsignificant effect, and the overall effect is only at the 3.03 sigma level. Possible implications of the results are discussed.
