Widespread plasma downflows, which are observed from the Doppler shifts of CIV emission lines at about 100,000 K in the solar chromosphere-corona transition region, may be the return material of spicules. We simulate a solar spicule numerically with a single quasi-impulsive wave and take into account radiation, ionization, thermal conduction, and mechanical heating in the calculations. From the rise and fall of the spicular material it is shown that the observed downflow is a direct result of the spicular upflow. The velocities and other properties of downflows can be explained reasonably in our model.
