Spacecraft agencies worldwide are contemplating formation-flying missions. Both loose swarms of spacecrafts and formations requiring tight position and inter-spacecraft control are considered. In both cases, formation-flying position and attitude information needs to be generated. Apart from acting as an accurate attitude reference for the formation, autonomous star trackers like the Advanced Stellar Compass (ASC) or the Micro ASC (µASC) may be used as a very reliable, fast and accurate formation-flying sensor, that can generate the information needed both for the initial acquisition and to maintain the formation control once established. This paper describes the basic use of the µASC as a base instrument for autonomous formation flying. Acquisition time, from no to full position knowledge is given and the range of distances over which this method is useful is discussed for various classes of spacecrafts and orbits. Finally, the achievable inter- spacecraft pointing accuracies are addressed.
