Pulsars were first discovered by radio astronomers in Cambridge, England, in the summer of 1967. The characteristics of a number of pulsars are considered along with the possibilities provided by pulsars for the study of the interstellar material. The characteristics of very dense stars consisting of neutrons are examined, taking into account the possibilities for a formation of such neutron stars in a final stage of stellar evolution. Attention is given to the Crab Nebula, the role of pulsars as natural synchrotrons, gravitational waves from pulsars, the origin of pulsar radiation, the occurrence of changes in pulsar periods, and the utilization of pulsars for the study of basic physical problems.
