The Australia Telescope, which began operating in 1988, is discussed. The technological developments leading up to the construction of the telescope are reviewed. The two parts of the telescope are described in detail. The telescope consists of a compact array which will synthesize a 6-km diameter telescope with high image quality, and a long baseline array, which will link telescopes from other institutions to synthesize a dish up to 3,000 km across with moderate image quality. The spectral-line operation capability, solutions to meeting the astronomical engineering requirements for the telescope, the signal pass, and data processing techniques are examined. Plans for using the telescope for various research projects are considered.
