The capabilities and technical improvements of the Schmidt telescope are reported. It is shown that large and fairly homogeneous interference filters and large image intensifier tubes make provisions for better photographic emulsions. Locations of Schmidt telescopes are tabulated, and past direct sky surveys are listed. Subjects for future direct and spectral surveys are reviewed.
