Scientific paper

Combined material derived from redshift, optical spectra, and radio observation of quasars is discussed. The need for complete samples comprised of optical and radio flux over a given area of the sky, and yielding statistical information on the space distribution of quasars, is based on their being the only astronomical objects on which it can be shown directly that their space density has been changing as a function of cosmic time.
