The organizational structure of the observatory, allocation of telescope time, and instrumentation are reviewed. Mayall 4m telescope prime focus photography performance represents a new class of large reflectors. Telescopes are being optimized for infrared work, and infrared detectors are being developed and incorporated into telescope instrumentation. Spatial interferometry is also being used. Observational research, including spectrophotometry of galaxies, discovery of young stars by mapping techniques at visual wavelengths, and infrared mapping, are reviewed.
