When a two-beam switching technique is used to minimise those fluctuations at the output of a radio telescope which are caused by tropospheric effects, the separation between the two beams of the radio telescope should be minimised. We examine the constraints imposed by the geometry of certain feeds, the electrical isolation between them and the distortion of the radiation patterns when such minimisation is sought.
