The 'jets' emitted by a central source are thought to be responsible for the formation of the giant radio double sources. There is no complete agreement regarding the nature of a jet. However, in most cases it is assumed that a focused plasma beam is involved. In many instances, indications for the existence of such jets can only be detected in connection with radio observations. However, in connection with two objects it was possible to observe the extended areas of intensive radio emission also optically. One of these objects is M87, the gigantic galaxy in the center of the Virgo cluster, while the other object is 3C 273, the brightest quasar currently known. It is hoped that the observation of these jets might make it possible to solve the riddle of the jet phenomenon. The questions which have to be studied are related to the physical conditions in the jets, the acceleration of electrons, and the mechanism involved in the focusing of the jets. The results of the reported observations are analyzed and the arising implications are discussed.
