The properties of the components of W UMa binaries are reviewed, and explanations for their nonperiodic variations are proposed. These binaries are characterized by equatorial velocities for the two components of not less than 200 km/s, heterogeneous temperature distributions, and variable perturbations including starspots and local reheating in the region of contact. A scenario is proposed in which losses in angular momentum due to the stellar wind eventually place the two stars in contact, following which the secondary component becomes increasingly smaller until the binary becomes a single star.
