The CORAVEL spectrometer is described, and its application to the study of binary systems is discussed. The instrument can measure the radial velocities of weak stars in several minutes with a precision of 0.2 km/s. The large periods of barium giant stars and S-type giants suggests that in these systems the wind of the giant star is captured by its degenerate companion. A study of spectroscopic binaries in the Galactic halo indicates that the older Galactic stars have periods of between 12 and 13 days. Also considered is the observation of multiple systems.
