Hydrogen-atom level populations and Balmer-line profiles are calculated for conditions typical of prominences. The calculations are based on the iterative solution of the system of radiation-transfer equations for Balmer lines. As a geometrical model of a prominence, a slab is taken. The photosphere radiation is assumed to be the only source of primary excitation of hydrogen atoms. The width of the H-alpha line and the magnitude of its central dip are plotted as functions of the optical thickness of a prominence. Graphs are presented which allow the optical thickness of a prominence and the Doppler width of the H-alpha line to be estimated on the basis of the observed H-alpha line profiles.
