Different methods for obtaining high spatial resolution in astronomical observations are examined. General aspects of instrument resolution are explored, taking into account the real intensity distribution and the accuracy limitations due to noise effects. Each of the high resolution techniques considered makes use of an interferometric process. The relative merits of the considered techniques are discussed.
