Scientific paper
The papers deal with Copernicus far-UV observations of the interstellar gas, balloon-borne UV observations of stars and the interstellar gas, analysis of UV absorption lines in interstellar clouds, an estimate of the interstellar ionization balance due to UV radiation, satellite observations of UV interstellar extinction, rocket observations of stellar UV spectra, UV studies of variable stars and the Magellanic Clouds, and preliminary results of a UV sky survey. It is suggested that photoionization by starlight is the predominant ionization mechanism in cool clouds, and UV maps are presented for the Large Magellanic Cloud. Individual items are announced in this issue.
