The one-dimensional MHD stellar-wind theory of Hu (1982 and 1984) is extended to two dimensions and employed in the analytical investigation of the fine structures seen in the radio jets of radio galaxies with strong (including QSOs) and weak central sources. The results of detailed theoretical calculations are presented graphically and compared with the observed magnetic-field configurations, with a focus on the weak-central-source galaxy NGC 6251. The correlation between strong and weak central sources and mainly longitudinal and mainly transverse jet magnetic fields, respectively, is reproduced in the model computations, and the corresponding field strengths are estimated as 200 and 1 microG.
