Attention is given to the role of the north-south component of the interplanetary magnetic field in magnetospheric substorm processes. The investigation takes into account both large-scale auroral photographs obtained with the DMSP satellite and interplanetary magnetic field data received from the Heos satellite. It is found that the occurrence of substorms does not depend on the size of the auroral oval, except for periods when the oval contracts to its minimum size.
