The distinctive physical characteristics of dark matter in the universe are described. Attention is given to the results of recent observational studies which have provided evidence of the existence of dark matter in the form of measurements of the mass-luminosity ratio for different regions of this Galaxy, elliptical galaxies, and cD galaxies with multiple nuclei. Consideration is also given to a discussion of the theoretical aspects of dark matter, within the context of Zel'dovich's pancake model of the early universe. A series of photographs is provided which illustrate the optical characteristics of this phenomenon.
