The evolution of the tidal torque between the earth and moon is examined in a review of recent numerical computations and model simulations. The models of present ocean tides are shown to predict the present tidal torque (50 PN m) to within 10-20 percent, which is within the limits of empirical accuracy but insufficient for strict application of the models to prehistoric time. Rough estimates using paleogeographic reconstructions of the extent of the oceans indicate torque variations of a factor of two over the last 450 Myr, with one such shift (from around 27 to around 55 PN m) currently in progress (minimum about 13 Myr ago; maximum in about 6 Myr).
