It is well known that measurements of Jupiter's decimetric radio flux and polarization are incompatible with a centred dipole model of the planetary magnetic field. Here it is shown that departures from a dipolar configuration cannot, by themselves, completely explain the observed variation of polarization position angle with Jovian longitude and that other effects must be invoked, e.g. planetary shadowing or non-rigid rotation of the magnetosphere. Apart from these effects the position angle measurements are consistent with the symmetry of the dual-dipole model of the planetary field, suggested by Smith et al. on the basis of the Pioneer 10 measurements.
