Fourier transforms of time series from a stochastically excited oscillator are fitted by different methods to Lorentz profiles in order to obtain the frequency, amplitude, and the damping constant of the oscillator. Simulations are performed to get estimates of standard errors of the parameters caused by discrete sampling, the random force, and the finite observation time. The effects of varying the damping time relative to the observation time are investigated. Amplitude variations as a function of time are calculated by different methods and are compared with measurements of the real Sun.
