A vertically oscillating system consisting of a stratified fluid whose density increases exponentially upward, and is subjected to a gravitational field acting downward, has residual instabilities associated with disturbances of small wavelengths in the vertical direction that may be removed by the application of a vertical magnetic field. This demonstrates that the vertical magnetic field, when applied to a vertically oscillating system to which a degree of electrical conductivity is imparted, can stabilize the latter with respect to small-wavelength disturbances in the vertical direction.
